Purpose - What do we mean by PURPOSE?

The concept of “life purpose” is something that I find intriguing and somewhat annoying. The idea that we were each born for some higher purpose and it’s our responsibility to find it in our adult lives makes me feel a little perplexed.

Are purpose and passion very different things? Being passionate about what I do energizes me and that energy confirms to me that this is what I should be doing. So, I ask this, is having passion important? Of course we all have a different take of what we feel is important and those important things give our lives meaning and happiness.

I have done a lot of research into finding life's purpose and much of it relates to giving something back or doing something for the good of mankind. I'm afraid in the real world I live in I am not a philanthropist or in that higher level of being where I can give back to causes that connect with me - I still have a mortgage to pay and a family to feed. Don't get me wrong I actively donate to charities and there are some causes that are dear to me however I do not feel I am here on this planet to GIVE to one cause or project. Does this make me wrong? Does this make what I do any less purposeful? I think not.

I admire and am at times envious of those who are clear on their purpose - to make women heard and seen for who they are, to build a company that is ahead of their time and that champions change, to create a recycling world for us and our future generations... to name a few - although I do not prescribe to the notion that we all need or should have a purpose. I believe in passion and ability... when you live your life through your values and surrounding those values you have found a passion - something that awakens you when you actively do it, something that when you are with like minded people you feel on fire - that's what I would describe as meaningful and purposeful. What is meaningful to you may not be to someone else.

So, instead of purpose lets look at passion and then this may well cascade into your purpose -

What drives you? Is there anything that touches you so deeply that it drives you? What energises you? Are you willing to sacriffice something to fulfil your passion? Do you want to help someone or thing? How do you want to help? Ask yourself: What do you love to do? And how do you apply this passion in your life? Perhaps the path of finding your purpose starts when you figure out how you can best use your passions and skills to achieve your unique goals and solve your unique problems or the problems of others. Perhaps when the question of “What is my life purpose?” arises what they’re actually asking is: “What can I do with my time that is important to me?”

So, instead of spending your hours contemplating your purpose and wadding through the mounds of information and research on the net why not start discovering what feels important to you.

Are you feeling stuck? Do you not know what you want in life? Do you know there is something out there for you but you can't put your finger on it? You need a life coach. Having someone to encourage you, keep you on track and accountable and most of all steer you towards the goals you want is like having a gym membership for your brain. Why be fit an healthy physically and be let down by your lack of direction and passion in your thinking.
